Finance ministers go to Washington

The annual meeting of Commonwealth finance ministers was held on Wednesday 21 September on the fringes of the Annual Meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Commonwealth Secretary-General, Kamalesh Sharma, said, “With the volatility in the world markets, increasing job losses, rising food prices and rising debt problems we are witnessing across the globe, this particular meeting of finance ministers is timely to explore ways of dealing with these multiple crises.”

Discussions centred on an exploration of innovative ways of raising finance in an increasingly resource-constrained environment. The meeting also looked at how to strengthen relations between the Commonwealth and the G20, and considered ways of accelerating development and achieving the Millennium Development Goals with more effective aid.
