Fifty years after Tanganyika was granted independence, and 47 years since Tanganyika united with Zanzibar, the United Republic of Tanzania is celebrating its Golden Jubilee. The country hosted a variety of events in the countdown to official Independence Day Celebrations on December 9, including musical performances, a national beauty pageant, an expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, a marathon run and a cultural festival featuring traditional music, dance and food.
The University of Dar es Salaam also celebrated its 50th anniversary in October, vowing to further develop higher education opportunities in the future.
